The importance of Pre & Post Natal Hydration....Why Water?

Water is essential and makes up over two thirds of our body weight and is a vital part of the body's transportation system
Our cells need water to function properly and our blood relies on water to carry nutrients around the body

In pregnancy that transportation system is more important than ever as your baby is relying on you to transport oxygen and nutrients for optimal health. So it is vitally important that you keep your water levels topped up to stay hydrated

 

Dehydration

The lack of water or dehydration in pregnancy can also result in problems such as constipation, haemorrhoids, bladder infections and headaches. Conversely the less water you drink the more the body wants to hold onto fluid resulting in swollen feet and hands

Dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, poor concentration and exercise form

This may increase your risk of injury whilst performimg exercise and result in joint or muscle injury.

You are also less likely to have energy to exercise and may feel de- motivated

Certain substances can also add to dehydration such as alcohol and caffeine

 

Hydration & Exercise

It's also important to take on extra water during exercise when you are pregnant for the following reasons:

  • In pregnancy your able to sweat more easily to help you regulate your body temperature more efficiently and naturally the more you sweat the greater risk of dehydrating if you don't replace lost fliud
  • You have a bigger surface area of skin (your lovely bump!) from which to evaporate sweat
  • Pressure on your bladder may make you pee more but that is no reason to cut down on water intake
  • With swimming exercise, just because you are surrounded by water doesn't mean you don't need to drink it!! Swimming pools are often humid and you still need to replace water lost through exercise
  • Your respiration rate increases with exercise and so does fluid loss
  • The pressure on your blood to transport more oxygen and nutrients to your baby requires extra water intake

Post Natal Hydration & Breast feeding

Your body needs tons of water to produce breast milk and not drinking enough water can lead to a reduced amount or even total loss of the bodys ability to produce breast milk.

Most mums find that they naturally are more thirsty when breastfeeding, however most mums are also very busy and distracted and fail to listen to their bodies 'thirst' messages.

So for optimum breast feeding try to drink water regularly throughout the day, put 'stick it' notes around the house to remind you!!
